John Moeti, a former midfielder for the Bafana Bafana and Orlando Pirates has passed away at the age 55 after eight months of sickness. He had been receiving specialized medical attention. Moeti was a part of the winning team that won the 1996 Africa Cup of Nations under Clive Barker. He was also a player of the Pirates squad that made history by being the first South African team to win Africa’s top club competition when they won the CAF Champions League (also known as the Cup of Champions) in 1995. Moeti died at the age of 55. He was injured just before SA’s debut World Cup appearance, which was held in France in 1998,had that injury not occurred he would have participated in the world biggest soccer tournament. The legendary player earned 29 caps for Bafana Bafana between 1995 and 1999 and also played for SuperSport United for a time. Moeti was one of the most refined midfielders of his generation. He was a stocky central midfielder with a biting tackle, but he was also silkily skilled and had a good eye for a pass.
The statement read, “It is with profound sadness and a deep sense of loss that we inform you of the passing of John ‘Dungi’ Moeti.”John suddenly took ill eight months ago and was receiving specialist medical care. John succumbed to his illness in the early hours of this morning at home, surrounded by his family and brethren in prayer.We thank you sincerely for your prayers and steadfast support.The family wishes to be afforded privacy during this time of loss, and funeral details will be advised in due course.”
Johnny, who was nurtured in Johannesburg’s Soweto township, began playing soccer at an early age and advanced fast through the ranks to become one of the best players of his time. He played for elite teams in Europe and Africa during his distinguished career, winning several titles and honors along the way.
Johnny was renowned for his outstanding technical skills as well as his good sportsmanship and modest demeanor. He was a genuine representative for the game, constantly giving back to the areas where he played and inspiring youngsters to pursue their aspirations.He will be sadly missed by teammates, friends, and the soccer community as a whole because of his departure.
Sympathy on the demise of the Bafana Bafana Legend
Danny Jordaan, the president of SAFA, expressed his sincere sympathies to the Moeti family, friends, and the entire football community. “The South African Football Association and I wish to convey our sincerest condolences and heartfelt sorrow to the family and friends of Dungi Moeti, Our thoughts and prayers are with his family, loved ones and friends.”Said SAFA president.
The loss of the former teammate who was instrumental in his player development grieved the Amakhosi coach. Former Orlando Pirates and Bafana Bafana midfielder John Moeti has been praised by Kaizer Chiefs coach Arthur Zwane as a devoted and responsible player.Moeti and Zwane were teammates at Pirates, and the Chiefs coach expressed his sorrow at losing the football legend who was instrumental in helping him and other players improve through his guidance.
“I played with him at Pirates, he was my senior, very humble person, very dedicated and disciplined. He was one of the seniors that used to call us when we were young at the time and he used to call us and we had to listen to him. Trying to help us understand and see things differently. The nation has lost a giant” said Arthur Zwane.
“He’s a player that I admired as a kid growing up. I watched a lot at the old Orlando Stadium and even FNB. I have vivid memories. Ellis Park, I remember the match that resulted in the stampede and he was very good that night, him and Thabang Lebese that night stand in the little corner in the back of my head as having had very good performances”.
