Google maps will be introducing the ability to see speed cameras in South Africa. This will bring the functionality of Google Maps to par with other mobile navigation applications. Recently, more people have been opting to use the app Waze, thanks to its more robust suite of features that help people to navigate.
One of the most popular features in Waze is the ability to see speed cameras Incidentally, Waze is an application that also belongs to Google bought Waze in 2013 and has been offering a different suite of features on the popular Navigation app. It appears as though the rollout has been work in progress, with people reporting seeing crash and speed trap reports on the Google Maps app since last year. In the middle of May 2019 Google started rolling out the features in more countries.
Google confirmed the full list of countries that can now see speed cameras, which includes: Australia, Brazil, U.S., Canada, U.K., India, Mexico, Russia, Japan, Andorra, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Bulgaria, Croatia, Czechia, Estonia, Finland, Greece, Hungary, Iceland, Israel, Italy, Jordan, Kuwait, Latvia, Lithuania, Malta, Morocco, Namibia, Netherlands, Norway, Oman, Poland, Portugal, Qatar, Romania, Saudi Arabia, Serbia, Slovakia, South Africa, Spain, Sweden, Tunisia, and Zimbabwe.
With this feature, you will be able to see your speed limit on the bottom right of the app, along with icons for speed traps and speed cameras where they are present.
This feature has been available on Waze for some time but some people still do have different preferences. Many prefer the streamlined easy-to-use interface of Google Maps as opposed to Waze which can be overwhelming if you are not familiar to using it.
Google does seem intent to keep the two apps separate, so you must install both applications or make your choice between one and the other. The argument is that in other countries like the US, and UK, Google maps is geared more for people who are travelling on foot. Waze, on the other hand, is geared toward drivers.
When comparing the apps for functionality, Waze will still be the more useful app, thanks to its use of crowdsource reports that cover a whole range of motoring related information such as the presence of police, speed cameras, and even road closures and gas prices.
